Why This Is a Bigger Deal Than It Sounds

Siargao has hosted surf contests since 1996, and has been part of the WSL's qualifying circuit since 2014. This year was supposed to be another step up: a QS 6,000 event, the highest qualifying level.

Then, in July 2026, the WSL went further. They skipped the qualifying levels entirely and made Cloud 9 a full Championship Tour stop. That's the same tour that runs at Teahupo'o, Pipeline, and Trestles. It's the first time the Philippines has ever hosted one.
